meet zo
Zo Burton may be making his debut this fall, but he isn’t new to music.
The Arkansas native is a singer-songwriter, producer and musician whose story began as a preacher’s kid. He started playing keys by ear at three years old, an early sign of the perfect pitch he would later discover he had. Church became his first classroom, shaping the way he hears harmony, arranges, and approaches a song long before he ever thought of himself as an artist. By 12, he was already earning local radio play performing gospel covers, with years of gigs and appearances on other artists’ records to follow.
Gospel gave Zo his foundation, but the R&B of the ’90s and early 2000s gave him another language. He gravitated toward records where the vocals were as carefully arranged as the instruments—songs built on harmony, melody and feeling. As his taste expanded, so did his palette: R&B, hip-hop, gospel, pop and the sounds he picked up simply by spending a life around music all began finding their way into work of his own.
For years, he kept that work close. He wrote. Produced. Recorded. Started over. And, maybe most importantly, lived enough life for the music to finally sound like the person making it.
That range now sits at the center of Zo Burton.
He can be soulful without always being serious, nostalgic without living in the past, and vulnerable without giving up the parts of himself that just want to talk shit over a good beat. The throughline isn't a genre as much as an instinct: strong melodies, layered vocals, musicianship you can hear, and songs that leave room for people to find their own meaning inside them.
His debut single, “space,” is the first look into that world. Rooted in the vocal language of the R&B he grew up loving while looking squarely toward what comes next, the record marks less of a beginning than a decision to finally let people hear what’s been there all along.
